The Red-POP was established in 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, inspired by the UNESCOs Science, Technology and Society Program.
Objetives of the Red-POP
* General Objective
The general objective of the Red-POP is to strengthen exchange and active cooperation among the centers and programs for the popularization of science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean.
* Specifics Objetives
* To enhance the programs and centers technical excellence and quality.
* To
identify and suggest areas, programs, projects and activities for
regional cooperation.
* To disseminate the programs among decision-making centers and to participate
in national and regional decision-making spheres.
* To examine the problems and prospects of science and technology popularization
centers and programs, seeking solutions and alternatives.
* To increase the number of centers and programs and to widen geographical
coverage.
* To contribute to the training of centers and programs technical
staff.
* To support the design, production and exchange of materials.
* To contribute to the preparation, edition and publication of documents
on science and technology popularization.
* To support the operation of data bases.
Who are Members of the Red-POP?
The members of the Red-POP are formally institutionalized centers and programs
for science and technology popularization that have applied for membership
to the network, engaging themselves to support and promote Red-POP activities.
Currently the Red-POP has over 80 members from more than 15 countries in
Latin American and the Caribbean and has relationships with science and
technology popularization centers in many countries throughout the world.
Executive Direction
The Red-POP is coordinated by an Executive Direction constituted by a president
and a vice president. The Executive Direction is elected among the centers
and programs directors by the General Assembly of Red-POP for a two-year
term of office (that may be extended).
Sponsorship of Red-POP Programs
The Red-POP finances its activities through contributions from member centers
and programs, national, regional and international organizations and other
public and private organizations.
Red-POP Activities
Red-POP activities are established in the Cooperation Program (biennial)
which is discussed and approved by the General Assembly at the Red-POP meetings
held every two years (see the Red-POP Cooperation Program).
The Latin American prize for Science and Technology Popularization
The Prize is the highest recognition awarded in the region to a center,
program or specialist for their outstanding work and national and regional
projection in the fields of science and technology popularization.
Its objective is to promote activities for the popularization of science
and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean and to highlight efforts
and undertakings that are exceptional because of their creativity, originality,
rigour, and impact, both at national and international level.
The prize will be awarded every two years and presented at a Special Session
of the General Assembly of Red-POP. The prize consists on
$ 3000.00 USD and a certificate.
